New U.S. Soccer Age Group Changes Explained
Beginning with the 2026–2027 seasonal year, U.S. Soccer—alongside US Youth Soccer and US Club Soccer—will shift from a calendar-year age grouping system (January 1–December 31) to a school-year format (August 1–July 31). We believe this change represents a positive step forward for the youth game. By aligning age groups with the school calendar, players will have the opportunity to compete alongside their classmates and peers, strengthening team chemistry, improving social development, and helping reduce player dropout rates across the sport. At Coastal Premier FC, we believe this shift will create a more inclusive and development-focused environment. As a club committed to setting the standard for player development, we are excited for what this means for our players and families moving forward and will continue providing the best environment possible for our athletes to grow, compete, and succeed.
We understand that changes like this can raise questions, so below we have outlined key information to help families prepare.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is changing?
Instead of grouping players strictly by birth year (January–December), teams will now be formed based on a
school-year calendar (August 1–July 31).
Why is this change being made?
The goal is to align players with their school classmates and social peers. This helps:
- Keep friends and classmates together
- Improve player enjoyment and confidence
- Reduce dropout rates
- Support overall social and emotional development
How will this affect my child?
- Players born August–December may move into a younger age group to align with their grade.
- Players born January–July may move into an older age group.
Every player’s situation is slightly different, developmental level has been and always will be the main factor in player placement.
Will this impact my child’s development or opportunities?
Player development will always remain our top priority. Our staff will ensure every player continues to be:
- Challenged appropriately
- Developed at the right level
- Supported in their long-term goals, including high school and college pathways
We view this change as a positive step that enhances both development and the overall player experience.
What does this mean for Coastal Premier FC teams?
We do not anticipate much change with our existing core teams. We will work closely with our families to ensure:
- Clear communication
- Proper team placement
- A smooth and positive experience for every player
